"... or investigation of the etymology or origin of the names of our settlements."
Rare work, illustrated with the portrait of the author in anterrosto in the first volume.
Innocent XVII, 190: `Etymological attempt. It is a very interesting work, in which the Mirbaya revbade has spent long hours of studies, investigations and vigils, because it is proposed to link the origin or provenance of geographic names in Portugal, names of illustrious families and appellates, new work in Portugal and on the peninsula. Nor did the learned friars enter into this investigation. Only fr. Antonio de Sousa, in his vestiges of Arabic language, failed of some of our common names, originating from Arabic. This important work of rev. abbade of Miragaya dates from 1890, in which he concluded the Old and Modern Portugal. Pinho Leal, a worthy auctor of this important dictionary, died on January 2, 1884, when the work was about in the middle of Volume X. The publication being interrupted, the editors invited Rev. abbade of Miragaya to continue and conclude, for having been the "first cyrenéo" of the auctor, as this one quoted it repeatedly in the text of the work. Accepted rev. abbate the invitation and fulfilled. He wrote, then, the continuation and conclusion of volume X and volumes XI and XII until the end. ABADE PEDRO AUGUSTO FERREIRA: He was born in the house of the capella of Corvaceira, in front of the station of Moledo, in the municipality of Lamego, in 1833, and was baptized in the parish of Samodães, bordering that town. Legitimate son of José Antonio Ferreira, who was a relative of the holy officio; and D. Maria da Purificação Ferreira, wealthy farmers in the Douro. Having studied primary education in Penajoia, in 1846 he enrolled in the seminary of Lamego, whose course he followed and completed in 1850; passing to Coimbra, where he began theology course in 1851. He graduated in 1856. Returning to his parents` house, he went to Lamego. He celebrated the first mass in 1857 in the chapel of his house of the Corvaceira, and shortly after it received from the same prelate the appointment of prosynodal examiner and professor of canonical institutions of the seminary, where he was three years, being in the last one the regency of the chair of history ecclesiastic During the same period, he served as vicar general of the diocese. In 1861 he was introduced and found in the abbey of Tavora, where he was present in 1864, where he was introduced to the church of Miragaya, where he counts of a parochial exercise no less than thirty-five years. With its exemplary service in Távora and Lamego, rev. Abbot of Miragaya has at present forty-two years of priestly functions. He is a member of the National Monuments Commission, a member of the Association of Portuguese Architects and Archaeologists, of the Cameroonian Society of Commercial Geography of Porto; founder of the instruction of the same city, etc. It has the rank of knight of the Order of Our Lady of the Conception of Villa Viçosa.

Containing a historical news of the movement of the centennial, the works initiated by the Society of Instruction of Porto, all the official documents related to this Civic Commemoration, Circulars to the Municipalities and Scientific Societies of the Foreigners , program for the monument competition, news of the parties, solemn sessions, civic and fluvial processions, banquets officiaes, saraus, etc., the proceeds from the sale of the special stamp, the legend of Warships, Bibliographic section, news of the celebration of the centennial in the islands and abroad, pastoral of the Bishops of Porto, Algarve, Angra do Heroismo and Funchal, documents, notes, etc., etc. (Illustrated by Courrege Junior). . "
"In this book we seek only to gather all that, because of its significance and value, can contribute to the splendor of the homage that the city of Porto taxed the memory of Prince Henry. No other purpose has moved us, and here is the reason why we limit ourselves to the role of simple compiler, mentioning facts and events, as they have. The news of such an imposing civic solemnity dispelled by the newspapers, we understand that to assemble them in a book, giving them orders, would be to render an excellent service to scholars and collectors.

"Work based on numerous documents and drawings of Milanese architecto, Mr. Lucas Beltrami and phototypes of Mr. Carlos Relvas"
Illustrated with facsimile reproductions of engravings, maps, portraits and manuscripts made by Carlos Relvas and printed in extra text on paper of high quality and thickness. Work based on numerous documents and drawings of Milanese architecto Mr. Lucas Beltrani. In his time this prince aroused much sympathy between the Portuguese, however its history was completely forgotten. Duarte de Bragança (1605-1649) son of Theodosius II, Duke of Bragança, and brother of the future D. João IV of Portugal left the kingdom in 1634 to serve the Emperor Ferdinand III of Germany in the Thirty Years` War. In 1638 he visited Portugal when he was asked to take command of the revolt that would lead to the Restoration of Independence. When the news arrived in Germany the boy wrote to his brother (on January 12, 1641) to tell him that he would return to the kingdom as soon as he could, but Spain diplomatically obtained that the emperor arrested the infant in the fortress of Passau, from where moved to the fortress of Graz in southern Austria. D. João IV ordered the ambassadors to use all means to free his brother and asked for help to Pope Innocent XII without success. D. Duarte was sold to the Spaniards and locked up in the castle of Milan, where he died after eight years of captivity, on September 3, 1649.
